About the position

The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) is seeking a dedicated Teacher for Mild/Moderate Special Education within the Division of Alternative Education. This role is crucial in providing educational services to students with disabilities, ensuring they receive a comprehensive and supportive learning experience tailored to their individual needs. The Special Education Department at OCDE is committed to fostering a safe and healthy environment where students can thrive academically and socially. The teacher will be responsible for developing Individual Educational Programs (IEPs) and delivering instruction in various skill areas, including academic, functional academic, communication, self-help, social-emotional, and vocational skills. In this position, the teacher will create and present engaging lessons, reinforce concepts, and document student progress. Regular communication with parents, caregivers, and outside service providers is essential to ensure that each student's educational program is effectively implemented. The teacher will also supervise students during various activities, including lunch, recess, and field trips, and assist them with personal hygiene and grooming functions. Managing student behavior through positive behavioral strategies and implementing Behavior Intervention Plans will be key responsibilities. Responsibilities

  • Develop Individual Educational Program (IEPs) and provide educational services to students in accordance with students' IEPs.
  • Instruct special education students in academic and/or functional academic, communication, self-help, social-emotional, vocational, and other specialized skill areas.
  • Develop and present lessons, reinforce concepts, answer questions, assign/check work and document progress.
  • Accompany and monitor students on community-based instructional outings, work programs, and/or field trips.
  • Maintain regular communication with parents, caregivers, and outside service providers relevant to each student's educational program.
  • Maintain accurate student academic and behavioral data, records, and logs.
  • Supervise students during lunch, recess, field trips, bus loading/unloading, etc.
  • Assist students with personal hygiene and grooming functions including toileting, diapering, eating, dressing, and other self-help skills.
  • Manage student behavior using positive behavioral strategies; implement Behavior Intervention Plans.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or above from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • A valid California Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in Special Education for students with mild/moderate disabilities.
  • Authorization to provide instruction for ELD and SDAIE to English learners.
  • The selected candidate may be required to undergo additional employment clearances, such as probation clearance, as part of the hiring process.
