About the position

The Teacher Special Education - CCA (Academics) position for the 2024-2025 school year at Washington Elementary School District No. 6 is designed for individuals who are passionate about providing quality education to students with special needs. Under the general direction of the Principal or Director of Special Services, the incumbent will be responsible for creating a flexible and engaging classroom environment that fosters personal growth and motivates students to develop essential skills, attitudes, and knowledge. This role requires a commitment to diagnosing learning needs, planning lessons, and utilizing assessments to monitor student progress while maintaining open communication with parents and administration. The teacher will perform a variety of assessments and observations to identify areas where students may require additional or modified educational services. This includes developing individualized education programs (IEPs) in collaboration with classroom teachers, parents, and other professionals. The teacher will be responsible for implementing these IEPs, providing ongoing assessments, and making necessary modifications to ensure that each student's educational needs are met. Additionally, the teacher will coordinate and attend IEP meetings, ensuring compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and providing students with a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). In this role, the teacher will also be expected to maintain knowledge of special education teaching methods and best practices through professional development. They will establish and enforce classroom management structures that ensure the academic engagement and safety of all students, while celebrating their achievements and successes. The position requires a proactive approach to collaboration with various stakeholders to ensure that each student's educational experience is tailored to their individual needs.

Responsibilities

  • Perform assessments and observations to determine student needs for extra or modified educational services.
  • Identify student needs and develop related lesson and teaching plans.
  • Incorporate technology into lesson plans.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, parents, psychologists, social workers, and other staff to develop integrated education plans.
  • Lead the development of individualized education programs (IEPs) and set learning goals for students.
  • Develop and teach engaging lessons for small groups and individual students according to IEPs and 504 plans.
  • Implement IEPs and provide ongoing assessments to track student progress.
  • Coordinate and attend IEP meetings.
  • Maintain open communication with all stakeholders, including families and related services.
  • Ensure compliance with IDEA and provide FAPE to applicable students.
  • Complete and maintain all mandated paperwork according to guidelines and regulations.
  • Stay updated on special education teaching methods and best practices through professional development.
  • Establish and enforce classroom management rules to ensure student safety and engagement.
  • Celebrate student achievements and successes.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Obtain and maintain an appropriate Arizona Department of Education Teaching Certification for the position hired.
  • Obtain and maintain an Arizona Department of Public Safety Identity Verified Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of state and national standards, district curriculum, instructional materials, and assessments.
  • Ability to interpret data and assessments to make instructional decisions.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates flexibility, dependability, organization, and collaboration.
  • Ability to establish rapport with peers and parents.
