About the position

As a Technical Communication Specialist at the Denver Public Library (DPL), you will play a crucial role in developing comprehensive documentation that adheres to organizational standards. This position is integral to building and maintaining world-class digital services for the city of Denver. You will leverage your deep understanding of IT products and services to translate complex information into simple, polished, and engaging content. Your responsibilities will include collaborating closely with members of the IT department and our customers to establish the department's documentation strategy, ensuring effective communication both internally and externally across the organization. In this role, you can expect to engage in a variety of tasks, including developing or coordinating audit responses, policy documentation, project updates, Requests for Proposals, annual reports, technology plans, business cases, memos, and internal communications. You will also be responsible for designing, gathering content, authoring, and maintaining release notes, user manuals, software installation guides, and other documentation media for software products and online services. Ensuring the accuracy of documentation and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) through coordinated reviews will be a key part of your duties. Additionally, you will develop processes, templates, and structures for maintaining reusable documentation and help materials. Evaluating current content and proposing innovative approaches for improvement will be essential. You will research new technologies and techniques to ensure that DPL projects utilize state-of-the-art documentation methodologies and tools. Participation in the team's scrum processes will be expected, where you will gather and clarify software specifications and implementations to ensure timely and accurate completion of product documentation for each sprint. Completing special projects as needed will also be part of your responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop or coordinate audit responses, policy documentation, project updates, Requests for Proposals, annual reports, technology plans, business cases, memos, internal communications, and other media for consumption by technical and non-technical end users.
  • Design, gather content, author, and maintain release notes, user manuals, software installation guides, and other documentation media for software products and online services.
  • Coordinate documentation reviews to ensure accuracy of documentation and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Develop processes, templates, and other structures for maintaining reusable documentation and help materials.
  • Evaluate current content and develop innovative approaches and suggestions for improvement.
  • Research new technologies and techniques to ensure that company projects use state-of-the-art documentation methodologies and tools.
  • Participate in the teams' scrum processes, gathering/clarifying software specifications and implementations to ensure timely and accurate completion of product documentation for each sprint.
  • Complete special projects as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in technical writing, journalism, communications, information systems, a related field, or equivalent education and work experience.
  • Two or more years of experience as an effective technical writer.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Google Workspace (Docs, Slides, Sheets) and/or Microsoft Office, diagramming software, screen capture tools, and other multimedia content creation tools.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Develop content in alternative media forms for maximum usability, with consistent voice across all documentation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with agile methodologies and scrum processes.

  • Knowledge of library systems and services.
