About the position

The Technical Director & Facility Manager position at the Orpheum Theatre is a multifaceted role responsible for overseeing all technical elements related to the theatre, ensuring that rehearsals and productions run smoothly. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of the maintenance and preservation of historical venues, as well as a commitment to the general cleanliness and operational integrity of the facility. The role is designed to be filled by one candidate, although there is potential for it to be split into two part-time positions as the organization grows. The Technical Director will work closely with the Executive Director to ensure that all technical aspects of productions are properly advanced and that the requirements outlined in production contracts are met. This includes overseeing sound and lighting engineers, managing the physical integrity of the theatre, and ensuring that all systems are in good working order before and after performances. In addition to technical direction, the Facility Manager aspect of the role involves monitoring the physical condition of the Orpheum Theatre, assisting in planning renovations, and overseeing custodial functions. The Technical Director will also play a key role in development and public relations, working with the Executive Director to support the mission of the facility, coordinate fundraising campaigns, and conduct tours to foster community interest in the theatre. The ideal candidate will possess a high school diploma or equivalent, with a preference for a college degree in theatre production, and will have prior technical experience in stage or musical theatre, as well as experience in building maintenance and systems management.

Responsibilities

  • Review technical riders and production contracts and advise Executive Director regarding equipment or services requested by artists or renting organizations.
  • Ensure technical aspects of productions are properly advanced in a timely manner and that technical rider requirements are met when an artist or renter arrives in the theatre.
  • Oversee contracted sound/lighting engineers and/or stage crew during all rehearsals and performances.
  • Serve as a sound or lighting engineer at the request of management or renting organization.
  • Hire additional sound and/or lighting staff as needed or upon request from artist or renting organization, as per contracts.
  • Assist with load-in, load-out, set-up and strike as needed or requested.
  • Ensure that all technical equipment is in good working condition prior to and following each performance.
  • Repair equipment as necessary, or hire and oversee repair work by outside professionals when specific skills are required.
  • Monitor physical integrity of the Orpheum Theatre and its systems and report any faults or potential problems to Executive Director.
  • Assist Executive Director in planning large-scale renovation or repair work.
  • Maintain all lighting fixtures throughout the theatre in good working order.
  • Ensure the theatre and its facilities are ready for occupancy before every event.
  • Oversee custodial function of the facility and schedule contractors as needed.
  • Ensure Theatre marquee is in working order and changed to fit the event in a timely manner.
  • Add or remove production posters from theatre display cases and lobby board as needed.
  • Work with the Executive Director to support the mission, purpose, and priorities of the facility.
  • Develop and maintain a working list of future building improvements and capital projects.
  • Coordinate facility preservation fundraising campaigns as needed.
  • Research potential sources of grants and public funding related to building preservation and operations.
  • Conduct public and private tours to foster interest in the Orpheum in the community.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; college degree in theatre production preferred.
  • Prior technical experience in stage or musical theatre required.
  • Prior experience in building maintenance and/or systems management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Working knowledge of mechanical systems such as electrical systems, HVAC systems, plumbing systems, and fire alarm/sprinkler systems.
  • Knowledge of contemporary sound and lighting equipment, techniques, and trends.
  • Knowledge of theatrical rigging systems.
  • Ability to read and reproduce lighting plots as presented by artists or renting organizations.
  • Knowledge of basic theatre terms and stage directions.
  • Ability to provide basic sound services.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Self-motivated and able to work in an unsupervised environment.
