About the position

The Technical Writer position at the Division of Child & Family Services (DCFS) in Salt Lake City, Utah, involves creating and editing technical documents, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with federal and state laws. The role requires strong writing and analytical skills to interpret legal changes and their impact on departmental policies. The position is integral to supporting the mission of keeping children safe and strengthening families in the community.

Responsibilities

  • Developing or modifying policies or standards; coordinating the policy process.
  • Developing rules; obtaining feedback for the regulated sectors; coordinating the rulemaking process; monitors compliance with rulemaking requirements.
  • Reviewing and editing technical writing.
  • Ensuring compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, and/or agency rules, standards and guidelines, etc.
  • Providing consultation, making recommendations, giving appropriate advice, and/or facilitates decisions related to public information.
  • Developing and maintaining area specific records, reviews reports, and providing area centralization for agency-level coordination.
  • Acting as a resource for management and staff; providing technical support within areas of responsibility.
  • Analyzing, summarizing and/or reviewing data; reporting findings, interpreting results and/or making recommendations.
  • Writing or drafting technical reports, articles, or related material based on research, investigation or analysis.

Requirements

  • Experience in writing policy, or other technical writing documents.
  • Proficiency with computer programs such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Google Suite (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Forms, Sheets, and Slides).
  • Experience in interpreting and applying policies, grant requirements, technical directives, state or federal standards and regulations.
  • Compose and/or prepare correspondence, memoranda, promotional materials, forms, newsletters, manuals, and reports using appropriate word processing and spreadsheet tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • Five or more years of professional work experience in policy writing.
  • A bachelor's degree in technical writing or in English with technical writing coursework, with one year of professional work experience in policy/technical writing.
