About the position

ASRC Federal System Solutions supports the FAA NAS ESS (Federal Aviation Administration National Airspace System Engineering Support Services) contract. We are seeking a Technical Publications Editor/Writer Level 3 to join our growing team in support of the FAA's ASR-8/ASR-11 Terminal Surveillance Team (AJW-1433). This position is based at the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center (MMAC) in Oklahoma City, OK, where the team provides second-level engineering support for ASR-8 and ASR-11 RADAR hardware and software. In this role, you will be responsible for developing, writing, and editing a variety of technical materials including reports, manuals, briefs, proposals, instruction books, and other related publications. You will receive assignments from a supervisor and will be involved in observing production and participating in developmental and experimental activities to determine operating procedures and details. Your responsibilities will include interviewing production and engineering personnel, reviewing technical documents, and studying sketches, drawings, and specifications to integrate and delineate technology and operating procedures. You will also be tasked with organizing material and completing writing assignments according to established standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology. Additionally, you will maintain records and files of work and revisions, select appropriate illustrations, assist in the layout of material for publication, and arrange for duplication and distribution of materials. You may also specialize in writing material regarding work methods and procedures. The position requires proficiency in automated document and drawing products, including Microsoft Word and Visio, Adobe Acrobat, and configuration management applications. You will be expected to utilize advanced techniques such as styles, templates, and book features, and assist the Quality Assurance/Process Improvement staff with the development of guidance for quality improvement purposes. Your role will also involve supporting various documentation processes, including LEMs (Logging Equipment Modification), RMLS (Remote Monitoring & Logging System), and updating the DIS (Directives Information System) and FAA Orders and Notices website. You will provide training and assistance to new users and publishers, ensuring that all documentation is current and accurate. US Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required, and all applicants must have resided in the United States for the past 3 years. The ideal candidate will have the ability to describe information in simple, clear language, be proficient in Microsoft Office Applications, and possess excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience in technical writing or editing, as well as working in a team environment, is highly desired.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, writes, and edits material for reports, manuals, briefs, proposals, instruction books, and related technical and administrative publications.
  • Receives assignments from a supervisor and observes production to determine operating procedures.
  • Interviews production and engineering personnel and reviews technical documents to become familiar with product technologies and production methods.
  • Studies sketches, drawings, parts lists, specifications, and product samples to integrate and delineate technology and operating procedures.
  • Organizes material and completes writing assignments according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.
  • Maintains records and files of work and revisions; selects photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to illustrate material.
  • Assists in laying out material for publication and arranges for duplication and distribution of material.
  • Edits, standardizes, and makes changes to material prepared by other writers or personnel.
  • Prepares documents with automated document and drawing products including Microsoft Word and Visio, Adobe Acrobat, and configuration management applications.
  • Supports LEMs by determining sites affected by documentation changes and opening records for those sites.
  • Analyzes changes for RMLS and provides input to update maintenance schedules in handbooks.
  • Updates DIS and FAA Orders and Notices website; provides numbering support for notices and maintenance handbooks.
  • Distributes maintenance handbook information to the field and other users; provides monthly reports on printing costs to the FAA.
  • Supports SRM by reviewing decision memos and verifying documentation packages have appropriate SRM information.
  • Provides data to produce training videos and responds to field requests for prints.
  • Assists with website updates and verification of current information; reviews LOAs and coordinates field concurrence.
  • Provides WebCM assistance for the second-level engineering group and reviews casefiles for approval.
  • Updates the Publishers Check List with requirements for completing the documentation process and ensures current PCL is posted on NUDGE.
  • Provides documentation training for publishers and new users; updates and maintains FAQs and release notes for software change management.

Requirements

  • An associate's degree is desired or a minimum of 2 years' experience in a technical area pertinent to NAS support.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Proficiency in Visio, Adobe Acrobat, and configuration management applications is highly desired.
  • Direct experience performing technical writing or editing is desired.
  • Experience working in a team environment is desired.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with automated document and drawing products.
  • Familiarity with quality assurance and process improvement guidance development.
