About the position

Oceaneering Technologies (OTECH) is seeking a Technical Writer to join our team in Hanover, MD. This position is crucial for developing and maintaining technical documentation in a collaborative team management environment. The Technical Writer will engage with managers and engineering staff across various departments to create comprehensive technical documentation. This role offers the opportunity to utilize Microsoft Office applications and digital SGML/SML manuals to produce high-quality documentation that meets the needs of our clients and internal stakeholders. In this hybrid position, the Technical Writer will conduct thorough research, which includes reading source materials and consulting with subject matter experts (SMEs). The responsibilities will involve interpreting engineering information and drawings to write product descriptions, operational theories, and other technical manuals. The Technical Writer will adhere to published department standards and procedures while writing and editing documentation. Additionally, the role requires creating simple illustrations and screen captures, as well as coordinating with graphic designers for more complex illustrations. The Technical Writer will be responsible for submitting drafts to SMEs and peers, incorporating their feedback into the final documents, and providing periodic status reports to Project Managers and the Integrated Logistics Support Manager. This position is ideal for individuals who are detail-oriented, possess strong communication skills, and can work both independently and as part of a small team.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research, including reading source material and meeting with subject matter experts (SMEs).
  • Read and interpret engineering information and drawings.
  • Write product descriptions, theory of operations, and other technical manuals and documentation.
  • Write and edit documentation according to published department standards and procedures.
  • Create simple illustrations and screen captures as needed.
  • Coordinate the efforts of graphic designers for more complicated illustrations.
  • Submit drafts to SMEs and peers; incorporate review comments into documents.
  • Provide periodic status reports to Project Managers and Integrated Logistics Support Manager.

Requirements

  • Hold a Bachelor's degree, preferably in English, Technical Writing, or Communications.
  • 0-3 years of experience in the preparation and review of technical materials for publication, including writing maintenance, operations, troubleshooting, and set up/tear down procedures without source data.
  • Ability to work independently and in a small team environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to successfully interact with all levels of the company and subcontractor organizations.
  • Familiarity with engineering standards and language.
  • Familiarity with proposal formatting and language.
  • Well-developed application software skills in Windows environment, with emphasis in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and data.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with government and commercial contract requirements.
  • Ability to obtain security clearance.
  • Experience developing technical documentation in an engineering environment.
  • Familiarity with Government publication standards for specifications and manuals.
  • Experience with large-scale commercial and/or military systems.
