About the position

The Technical Writer is responsible for creating, editing, and maintaining a range of documents and correspondence for USCIS. This role demands a keen eye for detail, the ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely, and a strong understanding of the agency's mission and programs. This full time position will require the employee to work onsite at Camp Springs, MD. Monday - Friday, normal business hours.

Responsibilities

  • Editing correspondence and other materials for communication with customers
  • Organizing materials and completing writing assignments according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology
  • Ensuring that documents are written in accordance with the agency's style guide and editorial practices
  • Ensuring writing is easy to read and uses plain language
  • Reviewing draft documents to ensure they are free of errors
  • Fixing grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors in documents and correspondence
  • Ensuring accuracy of names, places, organizations, facts, dates, and statistics
  • Editing, standardizing, and making changes to material prepared by other writers
  • Selecting charts, graphs, tables, and other non-textual material for inclusion within documents
  • Creating page layouts and placing textual and non-textual material
  • Understanding the agency's mission and programs to determine appropriate writing and editing practices
  • Reading agency reports and documents to integrate writing and editing style
  • Reviewing draft materials and recommending revisions in scope, format, content, and publishing methods
  • Researching topics and locating and contacting sources for document development
  • Working closely with other writers/editors to enhance document readability, conciseness, and style
  • Maintaining records and files of work and revisions
  • Collaborating with DHS and USCIS immigration professionals in drafting, reviewing, and editing written products
  • Writing and editing communications related to complex, potentially controversial policies, programs, or regulations
  • Coordinating the formal review of official written products before agency approval
  • Interacting with USCIS Executive Secretariat on using agency's formal concurrence procedures
  • Performing research to ensure authoritative information development and communication
  • Maintaining awareness of USCIS programs and relevant activities for ongoing projects

Requirements

  • Associate's degree
  • 3+ years of experience in a technical writing position
  • 2+ years of experience in script writing
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
