About the position

The Technical Writer at InterSystems plays a crucial role in creating reusable content that aids various audiences in understanding and utilizing InterSystems products effectively. This position involves presenting complex information in a clear and accessible manner tailored to the target audience. The Technical Writer is an integral part of development teams, ensuring that documentation aligns with product features and enhancements. In this role, the writer takes long-term responsibility for a significant subject area, actively participating in development project meetings to convey status updates to other content creators. They are tasked with producing product documentation that details new features and enhancements for each release, while also continuously updating and improving existing documentation. This requires thorough research of complex and unfamiliar technical material from diverse sources, resulting in coherent and well-structured documentation that defines use cases and provides solutions to associated problems. Collaboration is key, as the Technical Writer works closely with online learning, classroom training, and certification groups to maximize the reuse of content for multiple audiences. They engage with stakeholders to establish appropriate schedules for documentation projects, set priorities, triage incoming tasks, and effectively rebalance workloads. The writer develops an in-depth knowledge of various InterSystems features or product areas, enabling them to address a wide range of subjects as required. Additionally, they focus on improving documentation quality, processes, productivity, and presentation, while raising and helping to resolve documentation and cross-departmental issues.

Responsibilities

  • Take long-term responsibility for a specific, significant subject area.
  • Attend development project meetings and convey status to other content creators.
  • Work on product documentation that describes new features and enhancements for each release.
  • Update and improve existing documentation on an ongoing basis.
  • Research difficult and unfamiliar technical material from diverse sources.
  • Produce coherent, well-structured documentation that defines use cases and describes how to solve problems associated with them.
  • Collaborate with online learning, classroom training, and certification groups to maximize reuse for multiple audiences.
  • Participate in the development of other learning materials as needed.
  • Work with stakeholders to determine the appropriate schedule for documentation projects.
  • Set priorities, triage incoming tasks, and rebalance workloads effectively.
  • Develop in-depth knowledge of various InterSystems features or product areas.
  • Address a wide range of subjects as required.
  • Work to improve documentation quality, process, productivity, and presentation.
  • Raise documentation and cross-departmental issues and help resolve them.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in using a variety of computer systems and software.
  • Excellent writing ability.
  • Superior interpersonal communication skills and adaptability to different communication styles.
  • Thorough understanding of technical terminology and concepts.
  • Four or more years of technical writing experience, which may include some technical editing.
  • Demonstrated autonomy and self-direction in the workplace.
  • Experience in determining and sorting out conflicting priorities.
  • The ability to develop structures for complex sets of information.
  • Easily able to adapt to new or changing organizational structures.
  • Demonstrated experience in learning new concepts and about new technologies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience with cloud-based computing including microservices architecture, Kubernetes, and SaaS/PaaS.
  • Experience in database administration and management.
  • Familiarity with popular programming languages such as Python and Java.
  • Knowledge of AI or machine learning.
  • Experience with FHIR, IHE, or HL7.
  • Understanding of API management.
  • Proficiency in SQL and object-oriented programming.
  • Experience with security in large enterprise systems or high availability systems.
  • Familiarity with InterSystems products.
  • Previous work experience as a developer, writing tutorials or programming examples, developing content for online learning, or as a technical editor.
