About the position
The Test Assistant provides test services to support the operation and maintenance of substation and electrical equipment with direction from a Test Supervisor, Project Test Specialist, Test Specialist or Test Engineer. This position is a four (4) step progression that provides the experience and training necessary for an incumbent to be eligible for advancement to the Test Specialist classification.
Responsibilities
- Performs power factor and breaker timing tests.
- Analyzes and interprets test results and presents findings for review.
- Performs basic relay testing.
- Performs technical calculations for test applications.
- Performs cable proof tests.
- Performs cable locating and fault locating services.
- Assists with the installation and testing of mobile transformers.
- Locates sources of radio and television interference.
- Performs prescribed tests on underground network protectors.
- Performs and supports the troubleshooting, repairing, and testing of electrical devices such as recloser controls, battery chargers, voltage regulators, etc.
- Adjusts and repairs substation recording and indicating meters other than watt hour meters.
- Assists with substation modifications.
- Assists with power quality investigations.
Requirements
- A Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology OR Associates degree in electrical engineering or electrical technology OR formal education equivalent to an Associate's degree in math and science.
- Individual must hold a valid motor vehicle license.
- Strong knowledge of and experience with transmission protection devices.
- Experience with carrier communication equipment, electro-mechanical and microprocessor relays.
- Knowledge of electrical protection principles and theories.
- Familiarity with electronic and computer controlled systems and devices.
- Understanding of computer networking techniques and methods.
- Knowledge of National Electrical and National Electrical Safety Codes.
- Ability to design testing systems and equipment.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Utilizing interpersonal skills to communicate with coworkers and supervisors.
