About the position

The Tiger Academy Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Specialist plays a crucial role in enhancing the academic mission of the Urbana School District #116 by providing essential social emotional learning support to students. This position focuses on fostering home/school/community partnerships and addressing barriers to learning, particularly for students in the alternative education program at Tiger Academy. The SEL Specialist is responsible for assessing and addressing the social and emotional needs of students, collaborating with teachers and staff, and implementing individualized learning plans.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Alternative Education Teachers/Staff and Executive Director to support students' social and emotional needs individually or in small groups.
  • Assist in developing and implementing individualized alternative learning plans for students.
  • Act as a liaison between students, parents, staff, and community agencies for SEL needs.
  • Assess students to determine their need for school social work or other services.
  • Establish and maintain home/school ties and work with families on issues affecting school performance.
  • Assist teachers in planning and implementing the SEL curriculum and interventions.
  • Participate in efforts to address student truancy, delinquency, and behavior needs.
  • Maintain records of SEL support provided to students and families.
  • Communicate with community agencies to address community-wide problems affecting students.
  • Evaluate and refer students and families to appropriate resources.
  • Adhere to laws regarding child abuse/neglect and cooperate with agencies for protective services.
  • Identify and offer in-service training for school personnel and parents.
  • Engage in professional growth activities and participate in professional organizations related to social work.
  • Recommend lesson and curriculum modifications for individual and group needs.
  • Work as a team to fulfill overall goals of Tiger Academy, including various projects and initiatives.

Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree in social work or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Two years or more of school-based experience preferred.
  • Experience in alternative education settings is desired.
  • Credentials in social work or counseling are desired.
