About the position

The Tissue Registry Technician position is part of the Summer Employment Opportunity Program (SEOP) at Mayo Clinic, providing temporary summer employment opportunities to children, stepchildren, and spouses of Mayo Clinic employees who are enrolled in a college degree granting program. The role involves reviewing pathology reports, selecting relevant SNOMED codes based on tissue site and diagnosis, and performing clerical and processing duties such as pulling and filing tissue samples, maintaining supply inventory, and working with various computer information systems. The technician must handle fresh and formalin fixed tissue, adhere to strict safety requirements, and be attentive to details.

Responsibilities

  • Review all pathology reports and select relevant SNOMED codes based on tissue site and diagnosis.
  • Perform clerical and processing duties including pulling and filing of tissue, glass slides, and paraffin blocks.
  • Maintain supply inventory, stock, receive shipments, and clean work areas.
  • Work with various computer information systems on a daily basis.
  • Handle fresh and formalin fixed tissue, organs, and amputations for archival purposes.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be a child, stepchild, or spouse of a current Mayo Clinic employee.
  • Currently enrolled in a degree granting program.
  • Returning to college in the fall.
  • Able to work a minimum of 10 weeks.
  • 18 years of age or older by the start of the program.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Background in science or 1-2 years of medical experience.
  • Previous experience or knowledge of computers and keyboarding.
  • Ability to accurately read specimen labels and work with numbers.
  • Organized and able to prioritize tasks.
  • Good human relations skills and effective communication abilities.
