About the position

The Underwriter II-Commercial Lines position is a critical role within our team, focusing on evaluating property and casualty insurance applications to assess the associated risks. The primary responsibility of this role is to determine whether to accept or reject applications and to establish the appropriate premium for the coverage. This position requires a thorough understanding of the property and casualty insurance landscape, including familiarity with products, services, and target markets. A typical day for an Underwriter II involves assisting in the evaluation of the acceptability, conditions, and pricing of specific insurance risks. The underwriter must maintain a keen awareness of the loss experience and business conditions of key accounts, as well as any significant legal or economic factors that may impact the property and casualty line of business. Effective communication with colleagues in underwriting and support areas is essential to meet the insurance needs of our customers. Additionally, the underwriter may accompany senior underwriters or marketing representatives on agency calls within their assigned territory, further enhancing their understanding of the market and client needs. Responsibilities

  • Evaluate property and casualty insurance applications to determine risk and decide on acceptance or rejection.
  • Determine appropriate premiums for accepted applications.
  • Assist in determining the acceptability, conditions, and pricing of specific insurance risks and associated coverage.
  • Maintain familiarity with products, services, priorities, and target markets in the property and casualty line of business.
  • Stay informed about loss experience and business conditions of key accounts, as well as loss trends and major legal or economic factors affecting the industry.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues in underwriting and support areas to meet customer insurance needs.
  • Accompany senior underwriters or marketing representatives on agency appointments in assigned territory.

Requirements

  • College degree or equivalent experience.
  • 3 or more years of underwriting experience with a carrier handling Commercial Package business in a production-focused underwriting capacity.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to travel in assigned geographic territory for agency calls.
