About the position

Argo Group is seeking an Underwriter II for Primary Casualty to join our dynamic team. This position is integral to our operations, where you will be responsible for reviewing and pricing policies to ensure they meet our underwriting guidelines and authority. You will play a crucial role in determining the acceptability of risks, overseeing endorsements, and resolving premium audit disputes within your assigned territory. In this role, you will utilize various underwriting tools to classify risks accurately, set rates, and determine premium charges. You will also need to stay informed about state laws regarding cancellation and non-renewal to ensure compliance in your transactions. Collaboration is key, as you will consult with general agents and brokers to gather information, quote rates, and explain our underwriting guidelines. Additionally, you will be responsible for creating, analyzing, and interpreting data from reports to manage your underwriting territory effectively, which includes mentoring less experienced team members and conducting educational sessions within the department. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in commercial casualty underwriting, preferably in excess and surplus lines, and will demonstrate excellent negotiation skills. You will need to be detail-oriented, possess strong analytical abilities, and be comfortable working independently in a fast-paced environment. This position may require travel to agent offices, and you will be expected to engage actively in the underwriting process while contributing to the overall success of our team.

Responsibilities

  • Review and price policies to verify acceptability based upon company underwriting guidelines and granted underwriting authority.
  • Determine whether to accept, modify, or decline risks.
  • Oversee and approve endorsements as indicated.
  • Resolve premium audit disputes within assigned territory.
  • Utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges.
  • Review state laws, including cancellation and non-renewal, within assigned territory to properly transact business within the state.
  • Consult with general agents/brokers to obtain further information, quote rates, or explain underwriting guidelines.
  • Create, analyze, and interpret data from various reports.
  • Manage assigned underwriting territory, including management of agents and travel to agent offices.
  • Mentor less experienced team members.
  • Conduct educational sessions within the department.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or 3 years related insurance experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five years commercial casualty underwriting experience with authority, preferably in excess and surplus lines.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and ability to effectively engage in the negotiation process.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Previous insurance educational work, IIA and CPCU designation strongly preferred.
  • Detail oriented with initiative and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer programs, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Nice-to-haves
