About the position

The Underwriter administers the underwriting and servicing of renewal accounts for brokers and producers assigned within the territory in compliance with company underwriting, authority, and pricing standards, upholding the standards of the AmTrust organization. This position is hybrid, requiring presence in the Scottsdale, AZ office from Tuesday to Thursday. The Underwriter is responsible for researching and developing new classes of business as directed, analyzing market trends and competition, and assessing market viability. They suggest form wording on endorsements and exclusions and support rate changes based on global strategy. In this role, the Underwriter reviews individual risks with assigned brokers, making decisions to either decline or accept business based on the necessary information. They analyze exposures to loss with a high level of technical expertise and accuracy, developing adequate premium charges for the exposure and determining endorsements and exclusions to address loss exposures for the insurance contract. This includes developing manuscript wording appropriate to the risk. The Underwriter is expected to achieve team and individual production and loss ratio goals with assigned agents and brokers through sound management and marketing practices. The Underwriter will work with complex issues concerning coverage, terms, and conditions, continually analyzing premium and loss results of assigned agents and brokers by state and major classes of business. They oversee or handle policy maintenance items and other mid-term requests, conduct midterm policy audits, and review endorsement requests to authorize necessary changes to the policy. Additionally, they review Loss Control reports and recommendations, collaborating with agents and brokers to ensure loss control compliance. The role may require travel to broker offices for training or marketing visits and entertaining clients visiting the company. The Underwriter also assists in the development of marketing ideas and strategies for underwriting events and other marketing campaigns.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • 5+ years of commercial lines property and casualty experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with and expert technical knowledge of Excess Casualty coverage and risk selection, methods, and pricing.
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing ISO Classifications.
  • Ability to interpret and analyze data and make informed, calculated risk decisions.
  • Ability to make sound contributions to tactical and strategic planning.
  • Ability to collaborate with individuals of various backgrounds within area of expertise.

Nice-to-haves

  • CPCU, AIS or CIC designation preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
