About the position

The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) is seeking an Underwriter for its Reinsurance team, which operates within the Finance and Risk Department (MIGFR). MIGA's mission is to promote foreign direct investment into developing countries, aiming to alleviate extreme poverty and enhance shared prosperity. The Reinsurance team plays a crucial role in maintaining MIGA's financial integrity by managing exposures that exceed desired net retention levels and optimizing the use of MIGA's capital. This position is based in Washington, D.C., and reports to the Head of Reinsurance. The Underwriter will be responsible for communicating with MIGA's reinsurance counterparties regarding waivers, consents, amendments, extensions, or increases to existing projects in MIGA's portfolio. This includes reporting any losses or potential losses on these projects. Additionally, the Underwriter will syndicate facultative reinsurance participation on new Contracts of Guarantee that MIGA underwrites. The role requires a deep understanding of the credit and political risks associated with MIGA's projects, as well as the ability to articulate these risks clearly to reinsurance partners. The Underwriter will also be tasked with optimizing technology solutions to enhance communication and syndication processes. This includes conducting thorough analyses of the reinsurance market to identify trends and potential new reinsurers, as well as maintaining effective relationships with existing reinsurers. The position involves collaboration with MIGA's IT department to design and implement technological solutions that improve business process efficiencies. The Underwriter will participate in relevant operating committees and support the prioritization of syndication workflows in coordination with senior team members.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with MIGA's reinsurance counterparties regarding waivers, consents, amendments, extensions, or increases to existing projects.
  • Report any losses or potential losses on existing projects in MIGA's portfolio.
  • Syndicate facultative reinsurance participation on new Contracts of Guarantee.
  • Optimize the use of technology solutions to enhance communication and syndication tasks.
  • Conduct thorough analysis of the reinsurance market to identify trends and potential new reinsurers.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with existing reinsurers.
  • Identify, design, develop, and implement technological solutions to enhance business process efficiencies.
  • Participate in relevant operating committees regarding the reinsurance of MIGA's portfolio.
  • Support the prioritization of syndication workflow in coordination with the Head of Reinsurance and Senior Underwriters.

Requirements

  • Master's degree with a minimum of 5 years of experience in underwriting, broking, reinsuring, or syndicating credit- and political risk insurance.
  • Comprehensive technical knowledge of credit- and political risk insurance (CPRI) acquired over at least 5 years in a (re)insurance company, multilateral organization, or international broker.
  • Extensive experience in a broad array of CPRI transactions across various geographies and industry sectors.
  • Ability to understand and draft new contract wording with assistance from MIGA's Legal Department.
  • Knowledge of structuring and pricing CPRI portfolios and products.
  • Hands-on experience with identifying, designing, testing, and implementing new systems/processes to enhance business efficiencies.
  • Familiarity with risk, financial reporting, and regulatory considerations associated with MIGA's guarantee products is a plus.
  • Highly collaborative personality with proven team player skills.
  • Excellent partnering and interpersonal skills to establish relationships within MIGA and with reinsurers.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Outstanding intellectual and analytical abilities with a focus on detail.
  • Conceptual creativity to leverage technology for business process efficiencies.
  • Sensitivity to operate successfully in multi-cultural environments.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in English, with proficiency in French and/or Spanish as a plus.
