The Underwriter will employ complex underwriting concepts in the determination of rate development for all group underwriting cases. This position requires the skillful application of current models to rate development, as well as advising and participating in the refinement and expansion of these models. The Underwriter will establish and apply company protocols while adhering to commercial medical underwriting guidelines. Additionally, the Underwriter will assist in protocol development and train associate or assistant staff in the performance of related duties. At the discretion of management, the Underwriter may also represent the Underwriting department in corporate-sponsored projects. The role involves analyzing health information from group applicants using commercially consistent underwriting guidelines. The Underwriter will manage communication of underwriting requirements and decisions with appropriate sales personnel, ensuring clarity and efficiency in the process. Proficiency in the use of all department underwriting software is essential, as is the ability to analyze rating software methods and make recommendations for expansions or improvements to the department's underwriting software. Understanding the competitive position of quotes is crucial, and the Underwriter will develop mechanisms for financial comparisons to support decision-making. Training assistant personnel in department processes and practices related to group underwriting is a key responsibility, as is tracking and managing exception provisions with financial implications for the company. The Underwriter will also mentor junior-level personnel and direct the compilation of all data necessary for auditing department activities. Ensuring compliance with domestic and international insurance laws and regulations is a critical aspect of the role, as is documenting department activities and developing underwriting guidelines for departmental control processes in collaboration with supervisors. The Underwriter will coordinate salesforce changes, fixes, and enhancements under the direction of the Director of Underwriting Operations and represent underwriting as a subject matter expert for various projects. Maintaining department file systems and performing other duties as assigned are also part of the job.
