About the position

The American Equity Underwriters, Inc. (AEU), a part of Amwins Group, Inc., is seeking an experienced underwriter to join our team in Mobile, AL. AEU serves as the program administrator for the American Longshore Mutual Association, Ltd. (ALMA), which is a group self-insurance fund authorized by the U.S. Department of Labor. Our primary focus is to provide USL&H coverage for the liabilities of our insureds under the United States Longshore & Harbor Workers' Compensation Act. With over two decades of experience in the maritime industry, AEU has established itself as a leading specialist in USL&H, prioritizing safety for waterfront employers and continuously striving to reduce risks for the benefit of employees and the industry as a whole. In this role, the underwriter will be responsible for evaluating risks to ensure sound underwriting performance. This includes collecting and processing complex data, producing pricing presentations to explain pricing rationale, and developing innovative solutions tailored to our customers' needs. Building and maintaining strong relationships with brokers and insureds is crucial, as the underwriter will need to demonstrate excellent service, problem-solving abilities, and uphold impeccable core values. The position reports directly to the SVP, Director of Underwriting, and plays a vital role in the overall success of the underwriting team. The successful candidate will be expected to manage the flow of business for their assigned team, delegate tasks appropriately, and provide clear instructions on various processes including quotes, confirmations, billing, collateral, endorsements, audits, collections, and cancellations. Additionally, mentoring Associate Underwriters will be a key responsibility, ensuring that the team is well-equipped to meet the demands of the role and uphold AEU's values to insureds and brokers.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and process insured's data and evaluate loss history and price to achieve performance standards.
  • Manage book performance, including long-term pricing plans and anticipating difficult renewals.
  • Communicate and present pricing to the team, management, insured, and broker with confidence.
  • Foster existing and future relationships with brokers and insureds, assisting in developing appropriate strategies.
  • Manage the flow of business for the assigned team and delegate tasks appropriately.
  • Provide clear and concise instructions on quotes, confirmations, billing, collateral, endorsements, audits, collections, and cancellations.
  • Mentor Associate Underwriters.
  • Demonstrate AEU's value to insureds and brokers.

Requirements

  • Solid working knowledge of underwriting practices using established underwriting guidelines.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
  • Ability to travel for in-person meetings.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and attention to detail.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills, comfortable having difficult conversations with insureds and brokers.
  • Adept computer and software abilities, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Analytical thinker with research proficiencies.
