About the position

CNA's Commercial Middle Markets team is dedicated to providing standard lines of commercial property and casualty insurance products, including General Liability, Property, Inland Marine, Commercial Auto, Workers' Compensation, and Umbrella coverage to businesses of all sizes. The Underwriting Associate plays a crucial role in underwriting a diverse mix of business and industry classes such as Manufacturing, Professional Services, Financial Institutions, Real Estate, Distributors, Technology, Wholesale, and Retail. Under broad supervision, the Underwriting Associate is responsible for managing the underwriting lifecycle from submission through policy issuance for both renewal and new business within a limited authority. This position requires close collaboration with Underwriters to ensure that all necessary information is provided to facilitate prudent underwriting decisions. The Underwriting Associate will perform a variety of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines. This includes conducting underwriting analysis and documentation to assess the acceptability of risks in line with company standards for both renewal and new business. The role also involves handling endorsement requests within delegated authority, referring endorsements outside of authority to the underwriter with recommended actions, and engaging with agencies to clarify endorsement intents or seek missing information. The Underwriting Associate will manage an assigned renewal book, demonstrating the ability to triage renewal applications and formulate next steps for the underwriter, particularly for accounts that fall outside their authority. Additionally, the Underwriting Associate will act as a liaison within the branch and across CNA to resolve various issues, including billing and collections, risk control, and underwriting guidance. They will document assigned files to ensure completeness, compliance, and quality, and execute advanced pricing strategies on behalf of the Underwriter while adhering to regulatory and CNA-specific underwriting strategies. The role also includes completing quote proposals, negotiating with external partners, and serving as the first-line point of contact for producers and customers on account-related matters. The Underwriting Associate will proactively identify opportunities for upselling or account rounding and assist in marketing products and services through external partners, including making field visits. Furthermore, they will be expected to keep current on line of business strategies, state and territory issues, regulations, and trends, and may perform additional duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Property and Casualty underwriting including insurance products, policy processing procedures, and documentation.
  • Strong time management and analytical skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently on multiple tasks.
  • Strong capability to advise and coach others.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience and the ability to interact with a wide variety of people on a daily basis in person, via telephone, and email.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite as well as other business-related software.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Typically a minimum of three years of related work experience.
