About the position

The Underwriting Professional Development Program at Travelers is designed for individuals looking to build a career in underwriting within the Inland Marine sector. This program offers a structured training environment where participants will learn about underwriting philosophy, business unit products, and strategies, as well as develop essential skills in negotiation and relationship building. As a trainee, you will handle renewal business under direct supervision and gradually progress to developing new business as your skills advance. The program emphasizes personal initiative and encourages participants to seek out opportunities to observe account analysis discussions with experienced underwriters and underwriting leaders. In this entry-level position, you will be responsible for underwriting and pricing, where you will assess risk and make recommendations for less complex accounts. You will also establish effective relationships with customers, agents, and brokers, developing consultative sales and marketing skills through your interactions and coaching from your manager. The role requires you to develop negotiation skills and execute strategies that drive results, while effectively collaborating with others to seek enterprise-wide solutions to business problems. The ideal candidate will have a background in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Mathematics, or Sales and Marketing. This position does not involve managing others, allowing you to focus on your personal development and learning opportunities in underwriting and marketing. You will perform other duties as assigned, contributing to the overall success of the underwriting team.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrites and assesses risk for less complex accounts under direct supervision.
  • Establishes effective relationships with customers, agents, and brokers.
  • Develops consultative sales and marketing skills through interactions with agents/brokers.
  • Develops negotiation skills through coaching from the manager.
  • Collaborates with others on all aspects of the job to seek enterprise-wide solutions.
  • Takes initiative for personal development and seeks learning opportunities in underwriting and marketing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or one year of applicable business experience required.
  • Educational background in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Mathematics, or Sales/Marketing preferred.
  • Demonstrates an ability, desire, and intellectual curiosity to learn the business.
  • Uses knowledge of internal and external factors impacting the property & casualty industry to make decisions.
  • Identifies current or future problems or opportunities and analyzes information to support sound decision making.
  • Seeks out, builds, fosters, and maintains productive relationships to meet goals.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in Sales is preferred.
  • Valid driver's license or alternate means of personal transportation.
