About the position

The Unit Controls Algorithm Engineer at Trane Technologies is responsible for developing control strategies and algorithms for HVAC equipment, ensuring they meet product requirements while promoting sustainability. This role involves collaboration with product management and application engineering, as well as leading dynamic controls testing and hardware in loop testing. The position is hybrid, requiring onsite work three days a week, and aims to contribute to innovative climate solutions that minimize environmental impact.

Responsibilities

  • Work with product management and application engineering to understand product requirements
  • Develop control strategies and algorithms to meet or exceed product requirements
  • Develop technical specifications for software development and verification
  • Utilize effective communication techniques to help team members understand and implement the design strategy
  • Lead dynamic controls testing including test planning, lab support, and data analysis
  • Develop and execute hardware in loop testing for real-time data analysis
  • Advance model driven development methods
  • Travel overnight as needed, less than 5% of the time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics or related field; Master's degree preferred
  • 0-3 years of control theory experience
  • Classical control knowledge (PID control, linear control, digital filtering)
  • System modeling expertise with proficiency in Matlab Simulink
  • Understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid dynamics
  • Programming skills in C++ and ability to learn new programming languages
  • Ability to function in a team environment
  • Experience with product development processes preferred
  • Experience with HVAC Systems and Components preferred
  • Effective communication skills, both written and orally.

  • Advanced control knowledge (modern control theory, model predictive control, non-linear control, adaptive control)
  • Experience with HVAC control strategy
  • Knowledge of data analysis
  • Laboratory experience
  • Knowledge of sensors and actuators
  • Knowledge of HVAC equipment sequence of operations
  • Knowledge of HVAC system modeling.
