The Unit Secretary for the Medical Surgical unit at 6 West is responsible for a variety of clerical tasks that are essential for the smooth operation of the unit. This role involves preparing, maintaining, and processing patient, ward, and hospital data and records. The Unit Secretary plays a crucial role in ensuring that all patient information is accurately recorded and readily available for healthcare providers. This position requires a high level of attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment. In this role, the Unit Secretary will be responsible for recording, verifying, and entering patient and hospital information, which includes admissions, transfers, discharges, and patient census data. The individual will also assemble temporary charts and maintain an accurate unit census in the bed tracking system. Communication is key in this position, as the Unit Secretary will answer patient signals, assess patient needs, and relay requests to the appropriate personnel. Additionally, scheduling appointments and arranging transportation for patients are vital tasks that contribute to patient care and satisfaction. The Unit Secretary will also handle telephone communications, take and deliver messages, and provide information to patients and their families. This position requires strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as interpersonal and customer service skills. The ability to input and verify data accurately is essential for maintaining the integrity of patient records. Overall, the Unit Secretary serves as a vital link between patients, families, and healthcare providers, ensuring that the unit operates efficiently and effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Records, verifies, and enters patients, and hospital information reflecting admissions, transfers, discharges, patient census, and other applicable data.
  • Assembles temporary chart and maintains accurate unit census in the bed tracking system.
  • Answers patient signals, assesses patient's needs, and communicates requests to pertinent individuals as necessary.
  • Schedules appointments and arranges transportation for patients.
  • Answers telephones, takes and delivers messages, and provides information to patients and family members.

Requirements

  • High school diploma and one (1) year of related experience.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to input and verify data.
