About the position

The Unit Secretary at Mercy West Sleep Center plays a crucial role in providing clerical support to the nursing unit under general supervision. This position is integral to maintaining an organized and positive culture within the unit, ensuring that all administrative tasks are handled efficiently. The Unit Secretary is responsible for assembling and maintaining patient charts, answering telephones, managing the nurse call system, providing routine approved information, and relaying calls and messages as needed. This role requires a proactive approach to support the nursing staff and enhance patient care through effective communication and organization. In addition to the essential job functions, the Unit Secretary must be adaptable to the dynamic environment of a healthcare setting. The position may involve periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads, necessitating strong problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm in challenging situations. The Unit Secretary is expected to demonstrate strong customer service skills and effective communication, both verbally and in writing, to interact with patients, families, and healthcare professionals. The role also requires familiarity with electronic health records, particularly the EPIC system, and proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. While prior healthcare clerical experience is preferred, the position is open to candidates who can demonstrate the necessary skills and a willingness to learn. The Unit Secretary must also be prepared to handle various physical demands and working conditions, including exposure to potentially infectious materials and the need for manual dexterity in performing tasks.

Requirements
