About the position

The Unit Secretary/Nurse Support Tech (US/NST) at Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital plays a crucial role in supporting the nursing staff and ensuring efficient unit operations during night shifts. This position involves both clerical and patient care responsibilities, including monitoring patient vital signs, assisting with patient triage, and maintaining an organized work environment. The US/NST works under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN) and is responsible for communicating changes in patient conditions, managing supplies, and providing secretarial support as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in patient care by requesting, charting, and recording patient vital signs and finger stick blood sugars in a timely fashion according to hospital policy.
  • Assist with patient triage, admission, transfer, and/or discharge in a timely manner.
  • Assist with unit orientation by training or providing education to new employees.
  • Notify RN in a timely manner of changes in patients' cardiac rhythm.
  • Maintain an organized work environment to ensure easy access and a professional appearance.
  • Maintain optimal inventory supplies to enhance workflow efficiencies.
  • Provide secretarial support including faxing, copying, and charting.
  • Demonstrate responsibility for own competency and maintain all personal up-to-date requirements.
  • Collect and document patient data accurately and in a timely manner according to nursing policy.
  • Perform ancillary testing including finger sticks, covid/strep/flu/RSV testing, and EKGs.
  • Complete all assigned tasks and communicate patient responses to care provided to the RN.
  • Make frequent patient rounds for fluids and toileting, keeping the room clean and items within reach.
  • Pay extra attention to patients in high fall risk categories.
  • Help transport patients to/from procedures/rooms and assist with daily room cleaning between patients.
  • Assist with suction setup and oxygen setup in ER rooms.
  • Understand and follow health standards related to risk management, safety, and infection control.
  • Perform blood draws for lab tests according to policies and procedures.
  • Perform crutch training, Velcro and OCL splinting, and other ortho procedures within scope of practice.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • BLS Certification required.
  • One year of hospital experience preferred.
  • CNA certification preferred.
  • Phlebotomist certification preferred.
