About the position

The University Libraries are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Digital Accessibility Intern to support our efforts in creating inclusive and accessible digital environments. This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in accessibility testing, remediation, and advocacy while contributing to the Libraries' Accessibility Project Plan. The intern will work closely with a collaborative team, including the Accessibility Project Manager, Assistive Technology Specialist, software developers, and the Accessibility Project Team, to address accessibility challenges and ensure compliance with accessibility standards such as WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). The duration of this internship is from the Fall 2025 semester through the end of the Spring 2026 semester. This internship is part of the Bednar Internship Program through the Penn State University Libraries. The selected intern is required to participate in an internship curriculum, attend monthly Intern Community of Practice meetings, present at the University Libraries' annual Student Showcase in the spring, and submit a final internship report. As part of this program, it is recommended the intern be a member of the University Libraries Student Advisory Group.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in implementing the Libraries' Accessibility Project Plan to enhance digital accessibility.
  • Conduct automated testing using tools such as SiteImprove to identify accessibility barriers.
  • Perform manual testing of websites and applications in partnership with the Libraries' Assistive Technology Specialist.
  • Support accessibility awareness by contributing to internal communications and advocating for best practices.
  • Provide remediation assistance, including training and testing, for third-party content.
  • Collaborate with library colleagues to review workflows and ensure accessible outcomes.

Requirements

  • Interest in digital accessibility, usability, or user experience design.
  • Basic understanding of accessibility and digital design principles.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Willingness to learn and use accessibility testing tools (e.g., SiteImprove, screen readers, keyboard-only navigation).

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with accessibility standards, such as WCAG, ADA, or Section 508.
  • Experience with assistive technologies (e.g., screen readers, voice recognition software).
  • Coursework or prior experience in web development, UX design, or information technology.
