About the position

SUNY Geneseo is searching for a Communications and Security Specialist to provide essential communications, security, and public safety services within a 24/7 operation in the University Police Department. This role is critical in ensuring the safety and security of the university community. As a desk officer, you will be responsible for performing dispatching activities, utilizing various databases, online systems, and multiple video sources to monitor and respond to incidents effectively. Your duties will also include conducting patrols, which may involve building guarding, parking enforcement, and foot patrols, assisting University Police Officers as needed. You will receive direction regarding assignments and be briefed on current issues at the beginning of each shift, along with instruction in job-related law enforcement techniques. The position operates on a fixed schedule with rotating hours based on seniority, which includes nights, weekends, and holidays. Candidates for this role do not need to be on the University Police Communications & Security Specialist 1 (CSS-1) list to apply, but must meet specific qualifications outlined in the job description. This includes having a permanent appointment in a classified position or being reachable for appointment on the current NY State Civil Service canvass list. Additionally, candidates must meet one of the qualifications for NYS HELPS eligibility, which includes relevant experience in law enforcement or public safety dispatching, military service, or educational qualifications. Responsibilities

  • Function as a desk officer performing dispatching activities.
  • Utilize various databases and online systems for incident monitoring.
  • Monitor multiple video sources for security purposes.
  • Perform patrol duties including building guard and parking enforcement.
  • Assist University Police Officers with related duties as needed.
  • Receive direction regarding assignments and current issues at the beginning of each shift.
  • Provide public safety services within a 24/7 operation.

Requirements

  • Permanent appointment in a University Police Communications & Security Specialist, SG-10 classified position or reachable for appointment on the current NY State Civil Service canvass list.
  • One year of full-time experience as a police or peace officer.
  • One year of full-time experience as a dispatcher for a public safety agency.
  • One year of active military service with an Honorable Discharge, serving as a dispatcher of military police/security personnel.
  • Thirty (30) semester college credit hours from an accredited school.

Nice-to-haves

  • Valid NYS Drivers License
  • Completion of the 8-hour pre-assignment training course for security guards or possession of an active security guard license.
