About the position

The USDA-ARS is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Hilo, Hawaii, to investigate the structure, function, and epigenetic control of genes on the X and Y chromosomes of fruit flies, which are significant agricultural pests. This two-year appointment involves experimental design, data analysis, and manuscript preparation, utilizing advanced genomic technologies and high-performance computing resources.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate the structure and function of genes on the X and Y chromosomes of fruit flies.
  • Conduct full-length transcriptome sequencing and ATAC-Seq.
  • Explore chromosome-scale genome assemblies to evaluate changes in gene content across taxa.
  • Design experiments and analyze data related to sex chromosome evolution.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Biology, Evolution, Genetics, Entomology, or a related field conferred at the time of hiring.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with manual gene annotation.
  • Comfort with high-throughput sequence data analysis.
  • Proficiency in BASH, R, and command-line usage on an HPC.
  • Familiarity with Python3, Git, and workflow management.
  • Experience with differential expression and epigenetic peak analysis.
  • Experience in entomological systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with high-throughput sequencing platforms.
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics and data science.
