About the position

As a UT Testing Technician at BWX Technologies, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the quality and safety of our nuclear components through ultrasonic testing. This position is based in Barberton, OH, and operates on the 2nd shift. You will be responsible for studying and passing specific, general, and practical ultrasonic testing examinations, which are essential for maintaining the high standards of our manufacturing processes. You will take directions from the ultrasonic testing Group Leader, Examiners, and the NDT Supervisor, ensuring that you are aligned with the operational goals of the team. Your role will involve interacting with shop supervision, internal auditors, and customer representatives as needed, which requires strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively. Maintaining a clean and orderly workspace is vital, as you will be responsible for properly stowing instruments, reference standards, and equipment after use. You will also perform visual inspections of surfaces to determine their suitability for testing, which is a critical step in the ultrasonic testing process. In this position, you will read and understand manufacturing process plans and technical drawings, select appropriate equipment and instrumentation, and perform standardization of instruments according to established procedures. You will work closely with other ultrasonic operators and Examiners, transporting equipment and reference standards within the plant to the job site. Your responsibilities will include performing contact ultrasonic inspections in both shear wave and longitudinal wave modes, as well as UT thickness testing using digital handheld meters and A-scan display instruments. Additionally, you will prepare detailed test report data, including sketches and test reports, to document your results comprehensively. Supporting the shop in the proper indication location for the removal of ultrasonic and radiographic indications will also be part of your duties. This position has the potential for additional training and qualification as an automated eddy current inspection system operator, providing opportunities for career advancement within the company.

Responsibilities

  • Studies for and passes specific, general and practical ultrasonic testing examinations
  • Takes directions from ultrasonic testing Group Leader, ultrasonic testing Examiners and NDT Supervisor
  • Interacts with shop supervision and personnel, internal auditors and customer representatives as needed
  • Maintains a clean, neat and orderly workspace, properly stowing instruments, reference standards and equipment after use
  • Performs visual inspections of surfaces to be examined to determine suitability for testing
  • Reads and understands manufacturing process plans and technical drawings
  • Selects equipment, instrumentation, search units and reference standards appropriate to the job per base procedures, addenda and data sheets
  • Performs standardization of instruments to procedures, addenda, and data sheets
  • Works in tandem with other ultrasonic operators and Examiners when necessary
  • Transports equipment and reference standards within the plant to the jobsite
  • Performs contact ultrasonic inspection in both shear wave and longitudinal wave modes of heavy walled base materials, cladding and weldments
  • Performs UT thickness testing using both digital handheld meters and A-scan display instruments
  • Prepares detailed test report data such as sketches, test reports, and flyers to provide detailed documentation of results
  • Support shop in proper indication location for removal of ultrasonic and radiographic indications
  • Coordinate with UT Group Leader and other UT inspector operators on overtime and work schedules needed to support shop operations
  • Potential to become a candidate for additional training and qualification as an automated eddy current inspection system operator

Requirements

  • Associates Degree in technical field preferred, or relevant equivalent work experience of 2 years, or equivalent military training and experience
  • Must be capable of qualifying as an ultrasonic inspector operator for Navy specifications NAVSEA 250-1500-1 for welds, MIL-STD-2132 for base materials, and NSTR-99 personnel qualification
  • Training and/or experience in Eddy Current Testing is a plus
