About the position

The Utility Maintenance Worker position at the City of McAlester is essential for maintaining and repairing public utilities, including water lines, water meters, and sewers. This role requires a proactive approach to ensure the functionality and safety of the city's utility systems. The worker will be responsible for performing daily maintenance tasks, responding to emergency calls from the Fire and Police Departments regarding waterline breaks or sewer issues, and troubleshooting problems as they arise. In this position, the worker will dig up problem areas to locate water breaks or sewer line issues, prepare lines for repair, and backfill areas after repairs are completed. The role also involves marking the locations of water and sewer lines for repairs and operating various types of equipment, ranging from light to heavy machinery, such as Gradalls, Back-Hoes, Unloaders, Steel Wheel Rollers, and Front End Loaders. Additionally, the worker may use small hand tools like shovels, brooms, and rakes to assist in their duties. The Utility Maintenance Worker will also be expected to perform other related duties as assigned by management, ensuring that all tasks are completed efficiently and effectively. This position is critical for maintaining the infrastructure of the city and ensuring that public utilities are functioning properly for the residents of McAlester.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily maintenance of waterline and sanitary sewer.
  • Answer emergency calls 24/7 from the Fire and Police Department regarding waterline breaks or sewer problems.
  • Troubleshoot and locate water breaks, including digging up the problem area and preparing the line for repair.
  • Clamp or replace sections of water lines and backfill the area after repairs.
  • Troubleshoot and locate problems with sewer lines, including digging up the problem area and flushing the line with a flush truck.
  • Repair sewer lines as needed and clean up the job area afterward.
  • Mark the location of water and sewer lines to facilitate repairs of water meters.
  • Operate light to heavy equipment based on work assignments, including Gradall, Back-Hoe, Uniloader, Steel Wheel Roller, and Front End Loader.
  • Use small hand tools such as shovels, brooms, and rakes as necessary.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Prefer High School diploma, GED, or formal training.
  • Requires a valid driver's license.
  • Requires a class D water and sewer operator's license.
  • May require a CDL driver's license.
  • Requires one year of related experience.
