As a Utility Worker at American Water, you will play a crucial role in the construction, operation, and maintenance of the water distribution system. This position involves performing skilled tasks that include working with fire and domestic services, meter settings, water mains, and valves. You will routinely operate a truck equipped with a dump body to transport and dump loose materials such as sand, gravel, and crushed rock. Your responsibilities will also extend to the operation and maintenance of pump stations, facilities, grounds, and equipment, including electrical and mechanical pumps and motors. In this role, safety is paramount. You will be expected to perform all functions with a constant regard for the safety of fellow employees and the general public. Key tasks include cutting, threading, and joining pipe sections, performing wet taps, installing repair sleeves, and erecting barricades around worksites to protect workers from street traffic. You will also be responsible for breaking up pavement, manually digging ditches, and operating various machinery to regulate the flow of water. Additionally, you will be involved in the chemical treatment of water, documenting chemical feed activities, and monitoring system performance. This includes collecting water samples for testing and troubleshooting electrical and control circuits. The position requires a hands-on approach, as you will be maneuvering pipe sections, backfilling excavations, and performing maintenance work on company property and grounds. You will also be responsible for inspecting company vehicles and equipment to ensure they are in good working condition. This role may require overtime and the ability to work in various weather conditions, including exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and extreme temperatures.
