About the position
The Vertex Co-op Program offers students a hands-on opportunity to learn about the pharmaceutical industry while working closely with experienced professionals. The program is designed to foster innovation and teamwork, allowing co-ops to engage in meaningful projects and connect with organizational leaders. The role involves working as a co-op scientist within the Protein Sciences team, focusing on developing and testing new technologies to enhance CryoEM protein structure determination workflows.
Responsibilities
- Develop and test new grid technologies to reduce protein needs for CryoEM studies.
- Express and purify proteins from recombinant and/or native sources under the supervision of a senior scientist.
- Propose and test new CryoEM grid technologies to improve internal structure determination workflows.
- Characterize the native environment of the protein using biochemical/biophysical assays to analyze protein quality suitable for CryoEM structural studies.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree and currently enrolled in a graduate degree program.
- Major in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or chemical/biological/biochemical engineering.
- Basic knowledge of integral membrane protein purification techniques and biochemical/biophysical analysis methods.
- Attention to detail and ability to accurately establish and follow protocols.
- Strong communication and organization skills.
- Permanent legal authorization to work in the United States.
- Candidate must be enrolled in an advanced degree program if graduating before June 2025.
Nice-to-haves
- CryoEM experience is highly desirable but not required.
- An open mindset and willingness to learn new techniques as needed to support the Protein Sciences group.
Benefits
- Compensation range of $20.00 - $35.00 USD/hour.
