About the position

The Visitor Center Specialist is responsible for providing excellent customer service to visitors, answering inquiries, and maintaining tourism-related information and statistics. This part-time role involves clerical duties, retail sales, and ensuring the cleanliness and upkeep of the visitor center. The specialist will work under the direction of the Tourism Marketing Manager and may assist with various tasks related to tourism promotion and visitor engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Receive visitors and answer questions; respond to inquiries and refer to appropriate persons as necessary.
  • Answer telephone calls and assist callers or refer to appropriate persons.
  • Maintain inventory of tourism brochures and onsite retail sales merchandise.
  • Handle retail sales, cash handling, and cash reconciliation.
  • Prepare and process bulk mail for visitor inquiries.
  • Maintain Visitor Inquiry Database and visitor contact logs.
  • Update electronic events calendars and ensure accuracy of tourism website information.
  • Assist with the coordination of volunteers to assure appropriate workflow.
  • Provide event information to statewide travel publications under direction.
  • Maintain accurate visitor statistics and provide periodic reports to supervisor.
  • Perform regular cleaning of the interior of visitor center facilities.
  • Work outside traditional hours, including weekends, as needed.
  • Travel to assist with trade shows as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • 1-2 years of clerical or telephone reception experience, preferably in hospitality/tourism.
  • Neat appearance and professional conduct required.
  • Skill in operating a variety of office equipment.
  • Ability to effectively meet and deal with the public.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of Palestine and the East Texas region.
  • Experience in customer service and travel-related fields.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations related to tourism.
