About the position
The Water - Operator Apprentice position at the Department of Public Utilities in Orangeburg, SC, is designed for individuals looking to gain hands-on experience in the operation and maintenance of water treatment facilities. You will read meters, gauges, and dials to ensure proper functioning of the plant systems. Additionally, you will collect and test water samples, inspect plant facilities and equipment, and process various documentation related to department operations. Effective communication with supervisors and colleagues is crucial, as you may need to coordinate efforts to maintain service to customers, especially during emergencies or after-hours situations. Responsibilities
- Operate an assigned water treatment plant.
- Monitor chemical feeds and distribution, flow rates, and related treatment processes.
- Read meters, gauges, and dials to ensure proper operation.
- Collect and test water samples for quality assurance.
- Inspect plant systems, facilities, and equipment for compliance and functionality.
- Process documentation associated with department operations within designated timeframes.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and other employees as needed.
- Be available for after-hours work, weekends, holidays, and standby duty as required.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- One year of work experience demonstrating steady employment in any field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Driver's License.
- Must reside within a 30-minute response radius of Orangeburg, SC.
- Must obtain a valid D Level Water Treatment Plant Operator license within 18 months of hire.
- Must obtain a valid C Level Water Treatment Plant Operator license within 30 months of hire.
