About the position

The Biomedical Engineer at Kaiser Permanente plays a crucial role in ensuring the functionality and safety of sophisticated medical equipment and systems that are essential for patient diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring. This position involves planning, training others, and executing the installation, maintenance, and repair of biomedical equipment. The engineer will work under the supervision of a manager or designee, performing all phases of scheduled and corrective repairs of biomedical equipment and medical systems. This includes pre-issue and asset accounting, as well as the installation and de-installation of related equipment as necessary. In addition to repair and maintenance tasks, the Biomedical Engineer is responsible for conducting scheduled and unscheduled inspections, maintenance, and electrical safety tests of biomedical equipment to ensure compliance with relevant codes. Documenting the results of all inspections, maintenance, and tests is a critical part of the role, as is collaborating with other biomedical engineers across various specialties, including Instrumentation, X-Ray, CT/MR, Diagnostic Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, Clinical Laboratory, RT/Anesthesia, Ophthalmology/Lasers, and Clinical Systems Integrations. The engineer will also work closely with KPIT, business partners, and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) representatives. Frequent travel is a requirement for this position, particularly for Shared Services/Support biomedical engineers who provide service support. Occasional travel will also be necessary for Stationary Service Area Support biomedical engineers to assist other sites. All engineers will need to attend technical training, which may involve travel. The role may require after-hours work on both scheduled and unscheduled bases to complete necessary tasks, and engineers will be assigned to a weekday and weekend on-call schedule to perform emergency services. Communication devices will be provided and must be kept on during duty hours to ensure prompt response to service needs.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all phases of scheduled and corrective repairs of biomedical equipment and medical systems under supervision.
  • Conduct pre-issue and asset accounting, equipment installation, and de-installation as needed.
  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled inspections, maintenance, and electrical safety tests of biomedical equipment to maintain code compliance.
  • Document the results of all inspections, maintenance, and tests accurately and timely.
  • Collaborate with other biomedical engineers across various specialties and with OEM representatives.
  • Complete applicable documentation of all work performed in a timely manner.
  • Travel frequently to provide service support and attend technical training as required.
  • Participate in after-hours work as needed to complete required tasks.
  • Be available for emergency service on a weekday and weekend on-call schedule.

Requirements

  • Minimum four (4) years of experience in biomedical engineering or related field.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
  • Valid California Driver's License with a good driving record.
  • X-ray experience is required.
  • Experience and working knowledge of medical equipment and systems in general instrumentation or specialty area assigned.
  • Proficient in operating PCs with Windows operating systems.
  • Willingness to work extended hours.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associates degree or equivalent in electronics, physics, or related science preferred.
