About the position

Kforce has a client that is seeking a z/OS System Programmer in Rosemont, IL. As a z/OS System Programmer, you will be responsible for maintaining and optimizing the z/OS operating system environment. Your role involves ensuring the stability, security, and performance of mainframe systems. This position requires collaboration with architects and other teams to design, implement, and optimize z/OS system components. You will evaluate system performance, identify bottlenecks, and recommend improvements to enhance system efficiency. In addition to system design and optimization, you will manage databases on z/OS, including backup and recovery procedures, ensuring data integrity, availability, and performance. Automation is a key aspect of this role, where you will develop and maintain automation scripts to streamline repetitive tasks and monitor system metrics to automate routine functions. Effective communication with team members, stakeholders, and end-users is essential, as is the documentation of system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps. Problem resolution is a critical responsibility, where you will detect, analyze, and resolve system faults promptly, investigating performance issues and implementing corrective actions. You will utilize maintenance tools and procedures to keep the system up to date and stay informed about industry trends and best practices. Proficiency in one or more programming languages (e.g., COBOL, Assembler, PL/I) is required, as you will apply design techniques to enhance system reliability and efficiency.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of work experience in NonStop/Tandem environments.
  • Solid understanding of system, application, and database design principles.
  • Understanding of productivity factors and their impact on overall system and database performance.
  • Knowledge of fault detection, analysis, and resolution processes.
  • Proficiency in maintenance tools and procedures.
  • Familiarity with replication, performance factors, monitoring tools, and tuning procedures.
  • Strong database management skills, including backup and recovery.
  • Ability to automate repeatable functions and generate system metrics.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
