About the position

The 1.0 FTE Special Education Teacher for the Behavior Support Program at Teeland Middle School is responsible for supporting and assisting students who experience difficulties with coping and self-regulation. This role involves establishing trusting relationships with students who have social, emotional, and behavioral deficits, and providing both academic and social-emotional learning (SEL) instruction. The teacher will collaborate, coordinate, and facilitate Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings and transition plans for students, ensuring that each student receives the tailored support they need to succeed. Additionally, the teacher will develop and facilitate behavior intervention plans, sustaining a behavior program that offers a predictable and consistent leveled system for students. The primary goal of this position is to implement appropriate individualized education plans as defined by the IEP Team, advocate for disabled students, and provide quality services to eligible individuals based on current research and technology. The teacher will assist the Student Support Services in meeting audit and compliance standards while promoting positive attitudes about and toward Special Education. This role is crucial in fostering an inclusive educational environment where all students can thrive. The teacher will participate as an integral member of the IEP Team, assisting students in reaching obtainable goals, interpreting and promoting the program and its purposes to the school and community, and obtaining necessary educational test data for the development of IEPs. The teacher will also participate in parent conferences, required staff development activities, and assess individual student progress to identify appropriate program modifications. Utilizing a wide range of teaching methods, materials, techniques, and equipment, the teacher will support various types of disabilities and maintain a positive learning environment that provides access to the least restrictive environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support and assist students with coping and self-regulation difficulties.

  • Utilize paraprofessional and volunteer assistance in instructional programs.
  • Use a wide range of teaching methods, materials, techniques, and equipment for various disabilities.
  • Schedule activities to maintain a positive learning environment.
  • Maintain current knowledge in professional area including Federal Law and State Special Education regulations.
  • Assist in the modification and implementation of the screening and referral system as needed.
  • Keep accurate records and files for all Special Education students.
  • Monitor students' progress and update IEPs according to district procedures.
  • Promote a positive public image of the school district.

Requirements

  • Alaska Teaching Certificate-Type A.
  • Bachelor's degree with an endorsement in Special Education.
  • Experience with trauma-sensitive schools preferred.
