About the position
The Virtual Sign Language Interpreter will facilitate communication between students, teachers, and parents during live classes and video conferences in a remote learning environment. This role is essential for ensuring accessibility and fostering an inclusive atmosphere for students with hearing impairments.
Responsibilities
- Interpret spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa during live classes and video conferences.
- Collaborate with teachers to ensure accessibility of instructional materials for students with hearing impairments.
- Foster an inclusive learning environment for students with hearing impairments.
Requirements
- Minimum 1+ years of interpreter experience required.
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).
- Familiarity with sign systems used in educational settings.
- Certification as a sign language interpreter (e.g., RID certification) or equivalent qualification.
- Experience working as a sign language interpreter in educational settings, preferably in a virtual or remote environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Flexibility and adaptability to meet the diverse needs of students and navigate the challenges of remote learning.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in education.
- EIPA Score of at least 3.5.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing in K-12 or educational settings.
- Knowledge of educational technology platforms and tools for virtual learning.
- Understanding of best practices for accommodating students with hearing impairments in remote learning environments.
