About the position

The Substitute Teacher will operate under the direction of the site administrator and the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, providing on-call substitute teaching services as needed. This role encompasses both short-term and long-term assignments across various educational levels, including Elementary, Middle School, High School, Continuation High School, Preschool Special Education, Adult Education, Opportunity, and Independent Study. The Substitute Teacher is expected to follow lesson plans effectively, ensuring that the educational needs of students are met during the absence of regular teachers. In this position, the Substitute Teacher will be responsible for fostering functional student growth and development by identifying individual student needs and referring them to appropriate resources. Sensitivity to diverse family and cultural patterns is essential when planning and executing classroom activities. The Substitute Teacher will also maintain an attractive and clean classroom environment, working collaboratively with district staff, support personnel, local school staff, and parents to coordinate effective learning activities. Supervision of students during out-of-classroom activities is a key responsibility, along with maintaining behavior standards to create a conducive learning atmosphere. The Substitute Teacher will provide a classroom climate that promotes the emotional, physical, social, and mental development of students. Additional duties may include assisting regular certificated personnel, covering classrooms during I.E.P. meetings, and performing related duties as assigned. Computer literacy is desirable for this role.

Responsibilities

  • Follow lesson plans effectively.
  • Utilize functional student growth and development by identifying student needs and referring to appropriate resources.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to various family and cultural patterns in planning and following classroom activities.
  • Maintain attractiveness and cleanliness of the room environment.
  • Work cooperatively with District staff, support personnel, local school staff, and parents to coordinate effective learning activities for students.
  • Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities during assigned work-time and maintain behavior standards school-wide.
  • Provide a classroom climate and learning experience that furthers the emotional, physical, social, and mental development of the student.
  • Assist regular certificated personnel as needed.
  • Act as a roving substitute to cover classrooms during I.E.P. meetings or if regular classroom teachers have meetings.
  • Perform period supervision or cover vacant assignments as needed during the instructional day.

Requirements

  • Fluency in reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • Ability to plan, prepare, follow, and present lessons effectively.
  • Capability to maintain a climate conducive to student learning.
  • Experience in pre- and post-planning lessons.
  • Utilization of classroom discipline and management strategies.
  • Development and maintenance of open channels of communication between students and staff.
  • Ability to develop and maintain an atmosphere of mutual respect among students, teachers, and staff.
  • Record-keeping that meets the needs of the student and teacher.
  • Adherence to set guidelines, school, and District policies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Computer literacy is desirable.
