About the position

The Salvation Army is seeking a Human Resources Generalist for its San Diego Regional Office. This position is responsible for coordinating various Human Resources duties, including the administration of HR practices, payroll, benefits maintenance, time and attendance systems, and reporting. The HR Generalist will play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with HR policies and procedures, as well as maintaining accurate employee records. The individual will be involved in the preparation and submission of Employee Personnel Action Notices (PANs) for new hires, terminations, and salary/status changes through the TSAMM system. Additionally, the HR Generalist will onboard new employees, ensuring they attend the Divisional New Hire orientation, and maintain all employee files on-site, conducting audits as necessary to ensure compliance with organizational standards. The HR Generalist will assist the DHQ HR compliance Coordinator in processing Workers Compensation claims and ensure that staff files are current and match with files at the DHQ. This role requires collaboration with line supervisors to ensure the accuracy of payroll hours and the submission of completed payroll reports to DHQ Finance. The HR Generalist will also work closely with DHQ HR to stay updated on employee issues, TSA policy changes, and communicate relevant information to staff. Responding to HR-related inquiries and directing them through appropriate channels is a key responsibility, as well as assisting DHQ-HR in updating Program Directors and Managers on employee-related matters that may require corrective action plans. Moreover, the HR Generalist will prepare and submit job posting requisitions to DHQ and collaborate with the DHQ Talent Acquisition coordinator to address recruitment needs throughout the San Diego coordination. This position serves as the first point of contact for all HR general questions and concerns within the San Diego Coordination. The HR Generalist must demonstrate excellent attendance and be prepared to perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the HR department.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation and submission of Employee Personnel Action Notices (PANs) for new hires, terminations, and salary/status changes through TSAMM.
  • Onboarding new employees and ensuring attendance at Divisional New Hire orientation.
  • Maintaining all employee files on-site and conducting audits for compliance.
  • Assisting DHQ HR compliance Coordinator in processing Workers Compensation claims.
  • Ensuring staff files are current and match with files at DHQ.

  • Working with DHQ HR to check for updates related to employee issues and communicating changes to staff.
  • Responding to HR-related inquiries and directing them through appropriate channels.
  • Assisting DHQ-HR in updating Program Directors and Managers on employee-related matters requiring corrective action plans.
  • Gathering fact-finding information for DHQ-HR when necessary.
  • Preparing and submitting job posting requisitions to DHQ.
  • Collaborating with DHQ Talent Acquisition coordinator for recruitment needs throughout SD coordination.
  • Correcting payroll discrepancies with DHQ HR/Finance staff.
  • Acting as the first point of contact for all HR general questions and concerns in San Diego Coordination.
  • Performing other duties as assigned within the HR department.

Requirements

  • AA degree or two years' experience in an HR position preferred.
  • PHR or SHRM-CP certification is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs (Excel, Word, etc.).
  • Excellent grammar with good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Typing speed of 35 wpm or more.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
  • Possess initiative, adaptability, and responsibility to work with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, handle figures, and work with attention to detail.
  • Ability to function in a confidential manner and perform repetitive tasks without lowering quality of work.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in an HR position for two years is preferred.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.
