About the position

The Veterinary Assistant at Banfield Pet Hospital plays a crucial role in supporting veterinarians and veterinary technicians to ensure high-quality care for pets. This position involves advocating for pet health, educating clients, and maintaining a safe and effective hospital environment. The Veterinary Assistant is responsible for various tasks that enhance the productivity of the veterinary team and ensure the comfort and safety of both pets and clients.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the extra eyes, ears, and hands for the veterinarian and veterinary technician to ensure the best quality pet care.
  • Communicate with veterinarian, veterinary technicians, and all other associates to maintain the flow of patients.
  • Provide professional, efficient, and exceptional service at all times, including performing or preparing procedures that do not require veterinarian or veterinary technician assistance.
  • Educate clients about Optimum Wellness Plans, preventive care, pet health needs, hospital services, and other issues.
  • Obtain relevant information and history from clients and maintain proper and complete medical charts.
  • Ensure the safety of pets, clients, and associates by utilizing safe restraining techniques and maintaining clean, sterile, and organized treatment areas.
  • Assist with surgery as applicable.
  • Utilize technical skills to the fullest, within state practice acts and as outlined in the NAVTA guidelines for veterinary assistant skills and duties.
  • Mentor other paraprofessionals in the hospital.

Requirements

  • Certificate of completion from a NAVTA approved Veterinary Assistant program, or equivalent education, training, and experience.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • One year related experience required, with customer service experience preferred.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple tasks under distracting conditions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Demonstrated organizational ability and problem-solving skills.
  • Client service skills to ensure attentive and courteous service.
  • Mathematical ability to perform basic calculations and conversions.
  • Comfortable using computers and specialized software.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a veterinary setting or with animal care.
  • Knowledge of veterinary terminology and procedures.
