About the position

Colonna's Shipyard is seeking a 1st Class Structural Welder to support operations in our Shipyard in Norfolk, VA. This position involves welding metal components according to specifications and requires a high level of skill and experience in various welding techniques. The role is contingent upon contract award and involves working in challenging environments, including naval ships and shipyards.

Responsibilities

  • Weld together metal components of products as specified by layout, blueprints, or oral instructions using electric arc-welding equipment.
  • Prepare all material surfaces to be welded, ensuring cleanliness and readiness for welding.
  • Weld completion in various positions including flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead.
  • Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment using various welding processes.
  • Manually apply filler rod to supply weld metal as needed.
  • Clean or degrease weld joints or work pieces using appropriate tools.
  • Repair broken or cracked parts and fill holes as necessary.
  • Set up and operate welding equipment and select proper electrodes according to metals to be joined.
  • Perform grinding and joint preparation for NDT processes.
  • Construct or repair metal products by joining parts using various welding methods.
  • Read and understand Chemist and Competent Persons reports to ensure safety for hot work.
  • Mark or tag material with proper job numbers and identifying marks as required.
  • Wear personal protective equipment as required and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least seven (7) years' experience as a Welder.
  • Ability to perform multi-pass, all position fillet and butt welds using SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW.
  • Knowledge of welding techniques, tools, and equipment.
  • Ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the trade.
  • Ability to work effectively with others and comprehend blueprints, sketches, and templates.
  • Ability to enter and move through manholes to work in confined spaces.
  • Steady and reliable work ethic with regular attendance.
