About the position

The Assistant Coach for Girls Basketball at Sam Barlow High School is responsible for supporting the head coach in the overall direction, coordination, and coaching of the basketball program. This role emphasizes leadership, supervision, and administrative skills to foster the development of student-athletes while ensuring compliance with relevant rules and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the head coach in the coordination of all practices.
  • Analyze, demonstrate, and explain basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of basketball to participants and parents.
  • Enforce program policies and recommend policy changes to the appropriate administrator.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and other staff members.
  • Model and enforce appropriate policies, rules, and regulations concerning sportsmanship.
  • Maintain a commitment to ongoing growth of self and others.
  • Promote fundraising and grant applications for the program when appropriate.
  • Maintain equipment and supplies inventory and hold staff and students responsible for those supplies and equipment.
  • Supervise and manage site operations to assure safety and efficiency.
  • Maintain appropriate and accurate staff and student records.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment.
  • Act as a contributing member of district-wide committees as needed.
  • Cooperate in the arrangement of school-level public relations and publicity for special events and achievements as appropriate.

Requirements

  • Prior job-related experience in appropriate sport/activity and/or coaching.
  • Skills to work with coaches and students.
  • Knowledge of district policies and procedures regarding co-curricular activities.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to perform a variety of tasks and adjust to flexible assignments, including some night work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Driver's License and evidence of insurability.
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprinting Clearance.
  • Current First Aid Card and Bloodborne Pathogen Training.
  • ASEP (American Sport Education Program) Certification.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in coaching at the high school level.
  • Familiarity with OSAA rules and regulations.
