About the position

The High School Long Term Substitute Teacher for Chemistry at Boston Prep is responsible for providing instructional support and maintaining a positive classroom environment while the regular teacher is absent. This role emphasizes the importance of creating an inclusive educational experience that reflects the diverse backgrounds of students. The substitute teacher will engage with students, families, and staff to foster a supportive learning atmosphere and uphold the school's mission and values.

Responsibilities

  • Provide meaningful instruction for assigned classes in the absence of the regular classroom teacher.
  • Support the Assistant Principal and Principal as needed.
  • Be present in the building from 7:15am to 4:15pm daily.
  • Cover daily absences of teachers and attend classes when not covering a teacher's absence.
  • Create a classroom environment that fosters engagement and curiosity among students.
  • Assume daily tutoring responsibilities and cover daily duties as needed.
  • Communicate weekly with students, families, and school administrators regarding academic and behavioral concerns.
  • Attend occasional after-school events to support school culture.
  • Frequently communicate the school's mission to students and families.
  • Adhere to school academic and SEL protocols, including Circle practice.
  • Utilize collaborative problem-solving with students and model empathy.
  • Engage in professional development and collaborate with team members to advance the school's mission.

Requirements

  • A valid teaching certification in Chemistry or related field.
  • Experience working with high school students, preferably in a diverse educational setting.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively engage with students, families, and staff.
  • Ability to create an inclusive and supportive classroom environment.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and feedback.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a charter school environment.
  • Familiarity with anti-racism practices in education.
  • Background in social-emotional learning (SEL) strategies.
