About the position

The Chicago High School for the Arts is seeking a licensed World Language Academic Teacher-Spanish for the 2024-2025 school year. This full-time position is designed for an individual who is passionate about education and committed to fostering a rigorous college preparatory environment for students. The school is dedicated to developing artistically gifted, diverse scholar-artists through intensive pre-professional training in the arts, combined with a comprehensive college preparatory curriculum. The ideal candidate will be able to create a learning environment that challenges students to achieve high levels of academic success while also embracing the school's vision, mission, and core values. In this role, the teacher will be responsible for classroom instruction, which includes preparing and implementing lessons that promote proficient oral and written expression, critical thinking, and ethical applications. The teacher will also be expected to differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of students, design lesson and unit plans that assess student achievement, and utilize data to inform instructional practices. Collaboration with staff to develop best practices tailored to the unique needs of ChiArts' student population is essential, as is the integration of technology into assessments and classroom activities. Additionally, the teacher will be involved in various professional duties, including maintaining regular contact with parents and guardians regarding student progress, recording daily attendance, and providing meaningful feedback on student work. Participation in faculty meetings, professional development sessions, and school functions is also required. The position demands a commitment to continuous professional growth and a willingness to adapt and improve in changing situations, ensuring that all students are served to the best of the school's abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Embrace and promote the ChiArts vision, mission, educational approach, goals, and core values.
  • Implement trauma-informed, restorative justice, and anti-racist practices.
  • Prepare and implement lessons that encourage and foster proficient oral and written expression, critical thinking, applications, and ethics.
  • Create structured lessons that prepare students for success in both ChiArts' curriculum and standardized tests.
  • Collaborate with the staff to develop 'best practices' tailored to the unique philosophy and instructional approach geared toward the needs of the ChiArts' student population.
  • Design, administer, and track a variety of student assessment tools.
  • Integrate technology into assessments as well as classroom activity.
  • Employ outstanding classroom management skills and implement the school code of conduct.
  • Submit unit plans using the backward-by-design format.
  • Seek and participate in continuing professional development.
  • Attend and participate in faculty and administrative meetings, parent conferences, open house, other school functions, and in-service professional development sessions.
  • Use planning period effectively to prepare for classroom instruction.
  • Serve as an advisor in the student advisory program.
  • Monitor Study Hall effectively.
  • Perform other duties as the needs of the school and the needs of the students may demand.
  • Work with artistic staff to ensure overall student success at ChiArts.
  • Provide meaningful feedback and grade student work in a timely manner.
  • Record student grades weekly.
  • Maintain regular contact with parents and guardians regarding student progress.
  • Record daily attendance for each class period.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with Illinois teaching certification and endorsement(s) in the proper content area.
  • Curriculum development experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of the backward design planning process preferred.
  • An understanding of the value of arts education.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Proven ability to work with a diverse population.
  • Current knowledge of educational technology and application.
  • Expert knowledge of the subject area.
