About the position

The Instructional Assistant-Special Education (Personal Care) position at Desert Trails Elementary School is designed to provide essential support to the instructional program, specifically for special needs students. This role involves assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of students with various disabilities in both regular and self-contained classrooms. The assistant will work closely with the supervising teacher to adapt classroom activities and materials to meet the unique needs of each student, ensuring that they can participate fully in the educational process. The position requires a commitment to maintaining a safe and positive learning environment, which includes monitoring student behavior during non-classroom times and providing necessary personal care to medically fragile or physically disabled students. The instructional assistant will be responsible for implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) under the guidance of the assigned teachers. This includes administering tests, homework, and make-up work to support the instructional objectives. The assistant will also communicate regularly with instructional staff, professional support personnel, and parents to evaluate student progress and implement IEP objectives effectively. Additionally, the role requires the assistant to escort students to various locations within the school, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times. In this position, the assistant will also be expected to intervene in potential conflicts using appropriate therapeutic approaches and document instructional materials and student progress. The role demands flexibility, as the assistant will need to adapt to changing priorities and work collaboratively with a diverse group of individuals. The position is part-time, requiring 6.5 hours of work per day for a duration of 9 months, from August 2, 2024, to May 23, 2025, with a pay rate of $14.42 per hour.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students in various classroom settings.
  • Adapt classroom activities and materials under the direction of the supervising teacher.
  • Administer tests, homework, and make-up work to support teachers in the classroom.
  • Provide personal care to medically fragile or physically disabled students, including lifting, feeding, and toileting.
  • Attend meetings and in-service presentations to acquire and convey relevant information.
  • Communicate with instructional staff, support personnel, and parents regarding student progress and IEP objectives.
  • Escort students to ensure safe arrival to various destinations within the school.
  • Implement behavioral plans designed by the IEP team under the supervision of assigned teachers.
  • Monitor students during assigned periods in various school environments to maintain safety.
  • Perform general clerical functions to support the instructional program.
  • Provide instruction to students in individual and group activities under the supervision of the assigned teacher.
  • Remain with students at all times to ensure their safety and well-being.
  • Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Experience working with special needs students is desired.
  • Valid CPR and First Aid certifications are required.
  • Ability to perform basic math and understand complex instructions.
  • Knowledge of instructional procedures and practices for special education.
  • Skills in conflict resolution and understanding child development stages.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with medically fragile or physically disabled students.
  • Knowledge of behavioral intervention strategies.
  • Familiarity with IEP implementation and monitoring.
