About the position

The 2024 Special Education Long Term Substitute Teacher position at Minnetonka High School is a full-time role (1.0 FTE) that is available immediately and will last until November 27, 2024. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and providing educational programming tailored to the Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) of students with special needs, particularly those with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and other learning disabilities. This role requires a Minnesota K-12 ASD and/or ABS teaching license, with consideration for candidates holding EBD or LD licensure who are willing to obtain ASD licensure within two years. In this position, the teacher will communicate regularly with parents and guardians outside of the normal classroom hours through various means such as Schoology, newsletters, phone calls, emails, and conferences. Establishing and maintaining standards of pupil behavior is crucial to creating an effective learning atmosphere. The teacher will also be expected to engage in continuous professional development by participating in meetings, coursework, workshops, and seminars to stay updated with the best teaching practices. Collaboration is key in this role, as the teacher will work closely with colleagues, supervisors, and other staff members to support the educational needs of students. Responsibilities include case management for special education students, completing required Due Process procedures within mandated time frames, and performing other duties as assigned. The teacher will also be involved in planning and coordinating the work of paraprofessionals and volunteers in the classroom, providing input for their goal-setting processes, and participating in a professional learning community regularly. Additionally, training on third-party reimbursement will be part of the responsibilities, along with implementing necessary tasks related to it.

Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.
  • Collaborate in a fast-paced environment interacting with students, staff, administrators, parents, and the community.
  • Support and communicate with other administrators and staff.
  • Respond in emergency situations.
  • Know, interpret, and follow school district policies.
  • Plan and coordinate the work of paraprofessionals and volunteers in the classroom.
  • Provide input to the goal-setting process for paraprofessionals.
  • Participate in a professional learning community on a regular basis.

Requirements

  • Minnesota K-12 ASD and/or ABS teaching license required.
  • Consideration for EBD or LD licensure if candidate is willing to obtain ASD licensure within two years.
  • Experience understanding Autism Spectrum Disorders.
  • Strong curriculum background with experience teaching core content curriculum and teaching strategies.
  • Previous experience teaming with special and regular education staff.
  • Experience providing developmental skill instruction in reading, language arts, math, and social skills curriculum.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in using a variety of behavior management strategies.
  • Evidence of positive communication skills and interpersonal skills sufficient to exchange or convey information and receive work direction.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply appropriate skills in performing daily routines.
  • Ability to operate a computer, software, and necessary classroom technology.
  • Ability to develop effective and positive working relationships with students, staff, administrators, parents, and the community.
  • Maintain professional composure while dealing with a variety of personalities and situations.
  • Show initiative and function as a self-starter.
