About the position

The Robotics Engineer position at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is designed for recent graduates with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Mathematics. The role focuses on developing innovative robotic systems and algorithmic solutions to address significant challenges in various fields, including national defense, healthcare, and space exploration. The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team, contributing to research in areas such as robotics control, machine perception, AI, and human-robot interaction, while also having opportunities for personal research and publication.

Responsibilities

  • Define and develop new robotic systems and algorithmic solutions.
  • Conduct research in advanced robotic control, robot perception & reasoning, and generative AI for robotic applications.
  • Develop algorithms and implement machine learning techniques.
  • Design and fabricate hardware for robotic systems.
  • Integrate systems and support field tests.
  • Lead small teams based on expertise and project needs.
  • Publish work and present results to the scientific community and government sponsors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Experience in robotics or robotics applications of AI, computer science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or mathematics.
  • Proficiency in programming languages, particularly Python and C++.
  • Ability to obtain an interim Secret security clearance and ultimately a full DoD Secret-level security clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with technical writing and previous publications in scientific literature.
  • Experience developing, simulating, and demonstrating algorithms for robotic systems.
  • Experience developing AI/ML software that integrates with hardware such as robotic platforms, sensors, or medical devices.
  • Experience designing, fabricating, and integrating robotics hardware.
  • Proficiency in using robotics or AI libraries such as ROS, TensorFlow, Pytorch, and OpenCV.
