About the position

The Aerospace Corporation is seeking a Chemical Propulsion Research Engineer to join the Propulsion Science Department in El Segundo, CA. This full-time position involves supporting national security and civil space programs through the development, testing, and application of chemical propulsion technology. The role emphasizes experimental research and development in propulsion and high-energy systems, requiring collaboration with various stakeholders to address complex challenges in the space sector.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, test, and apply chemical propulsion technology in support of National Security and Civil Space Programs.
  • Execute advanced research and development programs in propulsion, chemical reaction kinetics, and fluid dynamics.
  • Establish and lead customer-supported research efforts utilizing existing Propulsion Research Facility and Aerospace Laboratories.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts within the Physical Sciences Laboratories and Engineering Technology Group.
  • Contribute to both experimental and theoretical aspects of shock waves, high-temperature kinetics, and propulsion technology.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry, chemical engineering, aerospace engineering, or mechanical engineering.
  • 0-1 year of industry work experience.
  • Experience in chemistry, combustion, gas dynamics, and/or propulsion.
  • Experience in experimental research and measurement, data acquisition, and data analysis.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills with a publication record.
  • Demonstrated coursework or research experience in Chemical Thermodynamics, Chemical Kinetics, Combustion, and Rocket Propulsion.
  • Willingness to travel domestically approximately 10% for technical exchanges.
  • Expertise in shock wave and combustion areas, including chemical kinetics and detonations.
  • Knowledge of spacecraft chemical/electric propulsion systems and experimental diagnostics.

Nice-to-haves

  • GPA of 3.5 or higher.
  • Active security clearance.
  • Experience with laboratory data acquisition equipment and sensors.
  • Chemical laboratory experience and experience writing laboratory reports.
  • Software skills in LabView, Visual Basic, MatLab, Python, SolidWorks.
