About the position

The 2025 Co-Op position for Manufacturing Electrical/Controls Engineer at General Motors (GM) is designed for students pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Controls Engineering, Controls System Engineering, or Computer Engineering. This role is categorized as onsite, meaning the successful candidate will be expected to report to their assigned plant on a full-time basis. The position offers a unique opportunity for co-op students to engage in hands-on work that contributes directly to the company's operations and culture. The selected candidates will be involved in various responsibilities, including control systems engineering and providing electrical support for multiple programs within the plant. This role emphasizes practical experience, allowing students to lead electrical projects that focus on operations improvements and new or replacement programs. In this position, co-op students will investigate system and equipment problems, providing technical guidance for problem resolution. They will conduct root cause analysis for machine failures and utilize statistical methods to drive continuous improvement in plant systems. The role also involves analyzing products, processes, and technologies to determine the best manufacturing methods. Co-op students will be responsible for developing cost estimates, investment forecasts, and business cases for minor project activities, as well as supervising planning timetables and project schedules. Collaboration with area manufacturing engineers on process and equipment planning is essential, as is supporting GMS and Quality Network implementation initiatives. Additionally, students will gain experience in programming manufacturing technology, including PLCs, HMIs, and robotics, while assisting maintenance personnel with niche equipment operations and maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate system and equipment problems and provide technical guidance in problem resolution.
  • Conduct machine failure root cause analysis and problem solving.
  • Utilize statistical methods for continuous improvement on plant systems.
  • Analyze product, process, and technology to determine the best methods of manufacture.
  • Develop cost estimates, investment forecasts, business cases, appropriation requests, and plans for minor project activity.
  • Develop and supervise planning timetables and project schedules.
  • Coordinate with area manufacturing engineers on process and equipment planning, including model change, throughput, sourcing, etc.
  • Support GMS and Quality Network implementation initiatives.
  • Program manufacturing technology (PLC, HMI, Robotics, etc.).
  • Assist maintenance personnel in the operation and maintenance of niche equipment.

Requirements

  • Pursuit of a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Controls Engineering, Controls System Engineering, or Computer Engineering.
  • Must be graduating between December 2025 and May 2028.
  • Able to work full-time, 40 hours per week.
  • Willing to work in a plant environment.
  • Enrolled in a co-op program at your university.
