About The Position

The Electrical Apprentice Signal Trainee position at Norfolk Southern is designed for individuals looking to start a career in railroad signal work. Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required; Technical Certification or Associate degree preferred in Electrical Technician, Electronics Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.
  • CDL Class A License required (must secure within 111 days of hire).
  • 1-2 years of job-related experience preferred; 3-5 years preferred for higher consideration.
  • Skills in time management, prioritizing work demands, communication, multi-tasking, and planning/organizing are essential.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, MS Outlook, and MS Word is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform FRA regulatory tests and inspections of signal systems and crossings.
  • Install, repair, and maintain signal lights, switch machines, electrical switch locks, and crossing warning devices.
  • Conduct maintenance and repair of automated classification yards.
  • Install, repair, maintain, test, and inspect various signal systems including Automatic Block, Traffic Control, and Positive Train Control.
  • Perform cable locates, painting, and housekeeping of signal housings and equipment.
  • Climb and troubleshoot signal structures and make electrical connections.
  • Use a variety of hand tools and test instruments for signal work.
  • Perform construction duties such as digging holes and trenches for cable installation.
